I love electronic music whether that be Chicane, Faithless, Loscil or Stellardrone and that is my go to genre of music, but there are two artists outside of electronica that have journeyed with me for most of my adult life.

One is the wonderful Martyn Joseph. An amazing singer songwriter from Wales. A supremely talented guitarist, singer and wordsmith with an authentic spiritual message.

The other is an an American singer songwriter Charlie Peacock. Wikipedia lists his genres as contemporary Christian, jazz and pop. I had two of his pieces at my wedding. He wrote one of my favourite songs, In the Light, but it is the song Experience that has had a real deep spiritual impact on me.

It is these four lines that have journeyed with me for nearly 30 years

We can only possess what we experience,

We can only possess what we experience,

Truth, to be understood, must be lived,

We can only possess what we experience.

I’m looking for an authentic spirituality.

As those in the computing world would say “wysiwyg”. What you see is what you get.

Now, I am a long way away from my inner and outer man being the same, but it is something that I strive for and it’s these words of Charlie’s that continually challenge me.

My heart is to create places where people can encounter God, but I can’t create those authentically unless I have first encountered God for myself. I must meet and seek God, experience him first hand, experience that truth and only then do I have the right or the permission to try and create opportunities for others to do the same.

I am sure Charlie’s words can speak truth and life to us all.
